Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson came back to his roots on 14th September 2008 to officially open a new youth centre for the team he started playing football with as a ten-year-old. Sir Alex began his career playing football with Harmony Row Youth Club, in Govan, Glasgow and he described their new state-of-the-art FieldTurf Duo pitch and complex at Braehead as "a dream come true".
As Patron of Harmony Row, he and others had campaigned for 15 years to create much-needed new football facilities for the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It’s a dream come true that Harmony Row Youth Club now has a fantastic football pitch and centre."
"And we thank people like Capital Shopping Centres who donated the land and a considerable sum of money to make the project happen, The ERDC Group who constructed the pitch and provide continued support, FieldTurf who produced the material for the pitch and NIKE for their generous donation."
"This Youth Centre will benefit many young people and encourage them to become active in sport and develop their skills. I’m delighted it has become a reality and that Harmony Row has such a wonderful facility."
There are around 300 members of Harmony Row Youth Club aged from six to adulthood playing football.
Ian Robb, Joint Managing Director of ERDC - who have been involved with Harmony Row for several years bringing in excess of £200,000 to the project with partner FieldTurf said "This was the first FieldTurf Duo pitch to be installed in the UK and the latest development in the synthetic surface that was installed at the Luzhniki Stadium, home of Spartak Moscow. The quality of the playing surface at Harmony Row is so good that Celtic asked if they could train there prior to their Champions League qualifier against Spartak Moscow. The pitch has been certified FIFA 2 Star."
ERDC is the UK’s sole distributor of FieldTurf.
